Announcing the National Archives Transcription Pilot Project!
You can help the National Archives make historical documents more accessible by contributing to transcriptions!
Transcriptions help in searching for the document as well as in reading and understanding the document. The work you do transcribing a handwritten or typed document will help the next person discover and use that record.
Available documents include letters to a civil war spy, presidential records, suffrage petitions, and fugitive slave case files, and today’s featured document - the Credentials of Hiram Rhodes Revels.

Preserving Pearl Harbor Documents
Damage varies from record to record, but dirt—a possible combination of sediment carried by the water and soot from the fire—is quite common. Although the records examined so far do not show direct contact with fire, many have burned areas where the paper was in contact with or adjacent to the post hole fasteners used to add pages to the booklets when needed. Not only did these metal fasteners conduct heat to the documents, but their exposure to the high humidity caused corrosion, resulting in rust.
The photo above shows a record of Robert Niven Frizzell, Seaman 2nd Class, who was killed in action Dec. 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor. Record shows burning around post hole fastener and surface dirt. (ARC Series #299693)
Note: This is one in a series of posts on conservation of Pearl Harbor documents.

The First Lady can tell you how to get to Sesame Street
Sesame Street premiered on television sets across America on November 10, 1969.  Since then, four First Ladies have been guests on the show.
This week is also the anniversary of the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967.  President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the act on November 7 of that year.
Happy birthday to the Muppets and minds that make Sesame Street!
Here’s Hilary Clinton with Big Bird and Rosita in 1993.  Can you name the other 3 First Ladies (not including Abigail Bartlet) who have been guests on Sesame Street? What topics would you like to see First Ladies talk about on the show?

Annotated Map of the British Colonies in North America with the Roads, Distances, Limits and Extent of the Settlements
On November 19, 1794, American negotiator John Jay signed a “Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation” with Great Britain. The Jay Treaty, as it is commonly known, was intended to settle lingering issues and boundary disputes following the Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolution.  Documents and maps such as this one were needed to settle the disputed northeastern boundary between the United States and Canada.
